What does special consultative status with the UN mean?
Special consultative status is granted to NGOs that have a special competence in, and are concerned specifically with, only a few of the fields of activity covered by the ECOSOC.
As a result of this status, the ISI participates in a wide range of United Nations-sponsored events, meetings, and activities, thereby contributing to the development goals of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nations (UN) .

ISI's President Stephen Penneck writes in his March 2023 blog, that having Consultative Status with the United Nations means that we take an active role in United Nations discussions on statistics, we are often asked to join working parties, and we attend the annual meeting of the United Nations Statistical Commission.

He further adds that, "this role follows on naturally from the historic activities the ISI has performed in the past. Prior to the establishment of the UN, it was the ISI that compiled the first publications presenting statistics from countries all over the world. Also it was the ISI Statistical Meetings (now the World Statistics Congress) which led to agreements on the statistical standards and classifications that countries now follow.
