The History of the International Statistical Institute
The International Statistical Institute was founded in 1885, during a meeting held to celebrate the Jubilee of the London Statistical Society. The initial 81 members were the elite of that era’s statisticians in government and academia. They established our first statutes, and our first half-century was a period of general stability.

The first international congress on statistics and data science was held in 1853 in Brussels, Belgium, with 26 countries in attendance, and chaired by astronomer, mathematician, statistician, and sociologist Adolphe Quetelet. Nowadays, the congress is known as the World Statistics Congress and is held every two years in a different country around the world.

WORLD STATISTICS CONGRESS AND REGIONAL STATISTICS CONFERENCES
Since 1887, the ISI has been organizing the World Statistics Congress every two years, with scientific sessions at the heart of the agenda, as well as a social program that allows delegates to network. Following the congress, the abstracts of the speakers are collected and published in the World Statistics Congress' Proceedings.
The International Statistical Institute Regional Statistics Conferences are held on odd numbered years. These conferences are excellent opportunities exchange knowledge, to network with colleagues and stay current with the latest trends in statistics.

SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS
The International Statistical Review and Stat are worldwide highly respected scientific journals of the International Statistical Institute. Together with our Associations, we publish 12 journals containing statistical and scientific content in total.
We publish research articles on various topics in statistics and probability, from theory to applications. We welcome papers on new research, challenges, and important issues in statistics and data science. Our readers include researchers and practitioners from academia, government, bank, business industry.
