President's Message

After a transitional year of 2022 at the ISI, we approached 2023 as a year of teamwork. We believe that the four strategic priorities for the ISI will continue to guide our activities. We see more to be done and more results to be desired.
Xuming He, ISI President
The highlight of the year was the 65th ISI World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, held from July 16-20, 2023. This was the first in-person WSC since the pandemic, and also the first WSC that was organized entirely by the ISI events team and the ISI volunteers in the Scientific Programme Committee, Short Courses Committee and National Advisory Committee/Statistics Canada. Despite the challenges from the pandemic and operational imperfections, WSC 2023 united us in the pursuit of statistical science for a better world.

The ISI Associations came together to share their experience and their plan for the future. We reiterated our commitment to an inclusive global community where everyone contributes. We discussed our vision for the ISI Academy as a new platform for statistical capacity development, where the ISI can take a leading role in partnering with other stakeholders around the world.

The 2023-2025 ISI Executive Committee sprang into action at the conclusion of WSC 2023. Each month, one of the Executive Committe members shared their thoughts to connect with our members through News & Blogs. In September, Kerrie Mengersen called on more members to join the ISI Public Voice Consortium, which helps statisticians to be better represented on local and global stages.
“The WSC 2023 united us in the pursuit of statistical science for a better world."
In October, Oliver Chinganya discussed the current landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) in African Statistics and outlined an important role that the ISI can play in AI-driven statistical endeavors. In the December column, Fabrizio Ruggeri reiterated the importance of member-centric collaborations and called for more voluntary contributions from members of the ISI and its associations.

Every Executive Committee member has been working behind the scenes to talk to members at large and gather input to help shape the action plans of the ISI. From the Executive Committee to committees, from the Permanent Office to our volunteers, we have been working together as a team.

We are not to be intimated by challenges, and we want to support all statisticians regardless of their origin and personal and political beliefs. We are working to support regional outreach, including the rebuilding of the ISI Eurasian Outreach Committee and establishing a regional network in Latin America. The ISI Associations held their meetings in many parts of the world, including the IAOS-ISI Regional Conference in Zambia and the IASC regional Conferences in Sydney, Australia. We are working to expand the presence of the ISI and its Associations in more parts of the world in the coming years.
In the same year, the ISI updated its Declarations on Professional Ethics, and its translations are now available in ten languages thanks to volunteers’ work in translation. It is truly the teamwork that characterized how we have been moving forward one step at a time at the ISI.

At the ISI, everyone counts. I call upon each and every member to support each other and move our mission forward.

Director's Message

For me, the most striking moment of 2023 was the first in person annual meeting of the United Nations Statistical Commission in three years where I saw people being happy and hugging each other because they were so delighted to see each other again.
Conchita Kleijweg, ISI Director
Of course they had met in regular online meetings, but is it very different to really see each other and have in person meetings to discuss relevant matters and the future of statistics.
And this is exactly what the International Statistical Institute is about. We connect people around the world and build bridges between official statistics, academia and research and the private sector. By connecting people we open doors that otherwise are more difficult to open. This enables us to work on our strategic priorities and achieve the goal we have: Statistical Science for a Better World.
In this Annual Overview you will find several examples of the connections we have made, in Livingstone, Zambia, during our joint IAOS-ISI Regional Conference in collaboration with the Zambian National Statistical Office, during our 64th World Statistics Congress and short courses in Ottawa, Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian National Statistical Office and University of Ottawa, in our regional webinars and in multiple online and in person events of our Associations and Committees. During these events the latest updates on statistical knowledge have been shared and valuable discussions have added to this knowledge.

"As an international association, we welcome the participation of statisticians and data scientists from all over the world. Because everyone counts!"
The new Executive Committee 2023-2025 decided we want to be more visible for members all over the world and thus increase our local presence. We intend to organize more local events and the ISI Academy will enlarge our online and in person presence as well.

2023 was also the year where the International Statistical Institute invested in digitalization and introduced a new Event Management System, a new website, a Communities platform for members only and prepared for a new Finance and Membership System that will be implemented in 2024. These improvements are necessary to make to International Statistical Institute ready for the future and facilitate and support our Associations, Committees and members.
